Rorya residents raise 68m/- for their school laboratories

Rorya MP, Lameck Airo
Rorya residents who live in a tanzanite rich area of Mererani, Simanjiro District, over the weekend collected more than 68m/- for the construction of secondary school laboratories in their home district.

The money was raised at the fundraising event held in Mererani town, involving Rorya MP, Lameck Airo, his host, Simanjiro MP, Christopher Ole Sendeka and  Rorya district commissioner, Felix Lyaniva.

The chairman of the fundraising event, Lucas Zakaria Chimba said the move was meant to collect 782m/- for building 67 labs across the district.

He said after the secondary school labs construction, the next move will be ensuring that competitive teaching staff were posted to those schools.
Rorya DC, Lyaniva, urged all people who came from the district to start thinking of investing heavily in education.

“Let’s put Rorya as the first priority…other issues would follow. It is high time for people   from Rorya to invest at home,” the DC said, adding his authority had already surveyed plots for residential houses, hotels, schools and other development activities.

He said the idea of organising such fundraising event for labs construction came after realising that the district was among the least when it comes to labs construction.

“Only four labs have completed since last year. Other 13 have not been furnished with the required facilities and 36 are in different stages of construction,” the DC said, adding that similar events were scheduled for Arusha, Mwanza and Dar es Salaam.

For his part, Rorya MP, Airo, pointed out that directives made by President Jakaya Kikwete last year, had been implemented below 50 per cent.

“I appeal to all people hailing from Rorya District to put aside their political differences and contribute to educational development for the welfare of the people…”

Simanjiro MP, Ole Sendeka also suggested the need for people from Rorya to inculcate a culture of supporting the district’s educational development. During the  event, Sendeka contributed 4m/-.
