Women with visual impairment for more active role in politics

Women with visual impairment want active involvement in politics arguing that they, as are able bodied persons, are capable of running for public office.

A representative of women with visual impairment, Graceelly Macha made the call here over the weekend when speaking at a meeting organised by Chadema Women Wing (BAWACHA) in Arusha Region.

The meeting involved more than 500 women from all corners of Arusha Region.
She appealed to political parties to create a platform whereby people with disabilities take part in the country’s politics.

“Let women in politics encourage those with disabilities to contest for various political posts because we have the rights to vote and be voted for,” she said.

She also took the opportunity to urge women with visual impairment to register in the permanent voters’ registry.

Commenting, national secretary of the BAWACHA, Grace Tendega, cautioned women not to be used as a bridge by politicians who tend to lure them with cheap gifts; “but after being elected they go away....it is high time, we wake up and elect a leader who can solve our problems,” she urged.
She also used the platform to encourage women to actively take part in this year’s election, by contesting in various posts.
