Speaking shortly after a tour of the TBL Dar es Salaam plant in
Ilala District, Deputy Minister Dr Kebwe Stephen Kebwe said; “through
our visit, we have realised that there is great understanding and
commitment to quality and standards among the employees, supervisors and
the TBL management as a whole.”
The tour was part of the ministry’s routine inspection of various
institutions within its jurisdiction and the Deputy Minister said
the target this year is to inspect all production plants within the
district.
Dr Kebwe underscored that factories must adhere to all the quality
and standards required by law and also the internationally
set standards.
“The ministry has now decided to carry out these inspections instead of just waiting for reports,” he said.
The Deputy Minister, who was accompanied by officials from his
ministry and others from the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA),
also lauded TBL officials for being organised.
“We have toured many factories but I must say, you are more organised and I must really congratulate you for that,” he said.
As for the firm’s health policies, Deputy Minister Dr Kebwe lauded
TBL for its HIV/Aids awareness programme at the work place which among
other things, sensitising employees to check their HIV status and to
learn of prevention methods.
During one of the presentations made that day, the Deputy Minister
was informed that TBL employees are tested once every year and that from
April last year to March this year, more than 83 per cent of the
employees were tested.
“This is a very good sign, I really congratulate you for this
initiative and it is my hope that from now on you will start carrying
out the tests twice a year as per the health regulations,” he said.
The TBL Dar es Salaam Plant Manager, Calvin Martin, said they were
delighted by the ministry’s visit and were proud to show how TBL
operates and adheres to set quality standards.
“We have taken them through the production plant and they are
satisfied with our quality and standards,” said the pleased manager.
